Hawkes has spent over 20 years photographing from aerial perspectives, documenting the beauty of the world's most renowned cities. Among them, London stands out as the city where this Oxford-born photographer has captured the most images.

What sets Hawkes apart is his unconventional approach to aerial photography. Instead of using drones like most, Jason Hawkes captures his images by leaning out of helicopters.

“London boasts a diverse cultural heritage and a plethora of scenic landscapes. From beautiful parks to towering skyscrapers and quaint neighborhoods resembling peaceful villages,” Hawkes explains his fascination with capturing London.

However, due to the abundance of subjects, Hawkes finds it quite challenging to select truly beautiful locations for his shots.

“I particularly enjoy shooting right after sunset. At that time, the city looks incredibly impressive,” he shares.

The helicopter Hawkes uses for photography is an AS355, typically flying at altitudes ranging from 228m to 762m above ground level.

Occasionally, Hawkes' helicopter descends quite low, hovering just about 120m above the Thames River, allowing him to capture unique masterpieces.

“The highest altitude I've ever shot from is about 6,000m above ground level. I had to wear an oxygen mask, and the weather was extremely cold,” the photographer recalls.

Each photography session lasts one or two days. However, if Hawkes wants to descend below 152m, he needs to wait for permission from the authorities, which can take some time.
