The new hotel room at the Manta Resort on Pemba Island in Zanzibar is a floating hotel room with a very unique setting, designed like other typical tropical hotel rooms – except that it is permanently floating above a coral reef.
The room was only put into use in November 2013, situated about 250m from the shore and surrounded by large glass windows providing guests with a panoramic view of the colorful underwater world outside. Above the water is a two-story roof structure providing all the amenities of a regular hotel room, but with a breathtaking view.
During the day, tropical fish and other marine creatures float and swim around the glass windows. At night, the lights illuminating the water outside the windows are turned on, attracting squid and other shy marine creatures. Imagine being gently rocked to sleep by the waves at night, waking up in the morning, and diving down to swim with tropical fish, what could be more wonderful?
The room rates here are around 1,500 USD per night for 2 people and 900 USD per night for a single person.
The creator of this floating room is Mikael Genberg, a Swedish artist. He is also the first person to create an underwater hotel room in Sweden called Utter Inn (Otter Inn). The single floating room is located at a depth of 3m under Lake Mälaren, similar to the room on Pemba Island, providing guests with a captivating underwater view right from their bedroom.
