Thái Nguyên College, formerly known as Bac Thái Economics High School, was established on December 20, 1978, under Decision No. 675/QĐ-UB by the People's Committee of Bac Thái province. On January 1, 1997, Bac Thái province was divided into two provinces: Thái Nguyên and Bac Kạn. Bac Thái Economics High School was renamed Thái Nguyên Economics High School. On October 1, 2003, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 5302/QĐ-BGD&ĐT-TCCB to establish Thái Nguyên College of Economics and Finance on the basis of Thái Nguyên Economics High School. On March 1, 2021, following Decision No. 276/QĐ-LĐTBXH by the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs regarding the merger of Thái Nguyên Pedagogical College into Thái Nguyên College of Economics and Finance and renaming it Thái Nguyên College, the merger was completed, and the College has been operating under the name Thái Nguyên College since July 2021.

Currently, Thái Nguyên College offers 11 departments for higher education, intermediate education, vocational certificates, and skill enhancement. For higher education, the College provides training in 14 majors; for intermediate education, it offers 19 majors and 07 programs for elementary-level majors. The College regularly updates its training programs to focus on practical vocational skills. New majors, training methods, and training collaborations are being expanded and diversified. Thái Nguyên Medical College, formerly known as Bac Thái Primary Health School, was established on December 26, 1966, under Decision No. 1476/TCDC by the Provincial Administrative Committee of Bac Thái. In 2006, the school was upgraded to Thái Nguyên Medical College according to Decision No. 6317/QĐ-BGDĐT dated November 6, 2006, by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Northern Law College was established on the basis of upgrading Thai Nguyen Law College according to Decision No. 869/QĐ-LĐTB&XH dated July 10, 2020 by the Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs. From 2011 to present, Northern Law College has organized training for 3,370 intermediate-level students in law, of which 2,775 students have graduated. In recent years, Northern Law College has proactively adjusted its annual enrollment scale to stabilize around 300 students, focusing on children of ethnic minorities from poor and near-poor households in border areas, especially those facing extreme difficulties, to provide vocational training, cultural education, and particularly to change their way of life. College of Commerce and Tourism formerly known as the Northern Mountain Business College was established according to Decision No. 447/QD-NT dated June 11, 1962 by the Minister of Industry. After years of construction and development, College of Commerce and Tourism has changed its name several times as required by the competent authority to suit each stage of development. Through the efforts in building and developing the institution, with the Prime Minister's approval, on March 27, 2006, the Minister of Education and Training issued Decision No. 1534/QD-BGDĐT to upgrade the school to College of Commerce and Tourism.
